Freelance routine without burnout
Freelancing sounds like freedom – you work when you want, from wherever you want. In practice, it often means you're working all the time, never feeling like you're done for the day. This routine is a framework to keep you from burning out.
1. Morning check-in with yourself, not with email
Before you open your inbox, answer yourself three questions:
- What is one thing I need to finish today?
- What is the "bonus" if I arrive?
- What am I definitely not doing today?
2. Work blocks instead of chaos
- 2 blocks for focused work (60–90 minutes)
- 1 block for communication (emails, messages, calls)
- 1 block for administration and planning for tomorrow
3. End-of-day ritual
A freelance day doesn't end on its own - you have to "close" it:
- Write down what you did
- move open tasks to tomorrow or another day
- close work tabs and applications
If you don't know when your day is over, your body will tell you through exhaustion. It's better to set boundaries.
